ahhh, spring

Wow. What a winter!

I've not blogged in a while. I could write up all the reasons why I haven't blogged, but let's just say I've had a crazy winter. Which leaves me to say, ahhh spring.

The weather has broken in Macon. The cherry blossoms have bloomed, the grass has had it's first cut, and we are planning what veggies to grow this summer. (Probably heirloom cherry tomatoes.)

And with spring comes baseball. Or in our case "wee-ball" (t-ball).

Isaiah is playing for the first time. While we've always played a bit in the backyard, there's a little more to it when there are 10 other boys you have to share the ball with. There's also that thing of trying to teach the fundamentals. Eye on the ball, glove on the ground, step and throw, run hard, always hustle, etc.

The first couple of practices were rough, and the first game wasn't much better. But this past week, Isaiah's team did pretty well not creating a pile-up on top of every ground ball. Wee-ball is really just about having fun anyway, and I enjoy the fact that there's no competition involved yet. The boys just get to play. And the parents get to help, teach, and laugh. A lot.

The Natural

As the baseball regular season draws to a close and we grieve the Braves so close yet so far last week *sigh*, the game lives on here in our backyard.

Isaiah received a tee ball set in May from Aunt Riri and then spent the summer hacking away at the tee (not the ball). This is no surprise because who really expects a 2 1/2 year old to be able to hit a ball off a tee.

Excited like it's 1991

I feel like I'm in 6th grade again.

The summer of 1991 was a very exciting time for Braves fans. Even though I was only 11 years old, I was fully aware of The Miracle Season. At the All Star Break, the Braves were in last place in the division with a record of 39-40, 10.5 games back of the Dodgers, who were in first. By the end of September, the Braves had won the pennant and were on their way to the World Series. The Miracle Season lasted 14 years. It began a string of winning seasons for the Braves that lasted until 2005 – 14 straight pennants. Everyone in the world of baseball knows how special that is, so the last few years have been rough for me. The Braves have struggled, and just when there seems to be a glimmer of hope – a losing streak dashes my heart upon the rocks. What I tell people is that the past few years, it's like I've been dumped by the same girl over and over and over again – and yet I keep coming back for more.

And now, mid-August with 48 games left in the season, there is a glimmer of hope. At the All Star Break the Braves were 2 under .500, but since the break they are 8 over and have only lost one series. As of today, they are tied for second place in the division with the Marlins and 4.5 games back of the reigning World Series Champions, the Phillies. AND, this weekend the Braves play the Phillies in Atlanta. Best case scenario, the Braves are 1.5 back after Sunday night. Worst case scenario is my heart gets broken...again.
